Individualized Intensive Outpatient Program
At Long Island DBT Group, we’re here to give each person the level of care they truly need.
We know that sometimes life can feel overwhelming—whether you’re going through a tough time or just need focused support for a short period. That’s why we offer a more intensive program that gives you strong support and flexibility, all while making sure the care is top quality.
There are times in a person’s life where they need a more intense treatment option to stabilize through a crisis, or only have a short time frame to work on their goals. We create an individualized higher level of care to provide structure and treatment tailored to each client’s needs
After meeting with one of our experienced therapists, we’ll come up with a treatment plan that works with your daily life.
A typical plan includes one-on-one therapy, group sessions to learn useful skills, educational support, and sometimes family therapy—especially if it helps everyone involved. We offer this program to teens, adults, and college students.
Our team meets often to check in on your progress and make changes if needed. When you finish the intensive program, you can either continue with one-on-one therapy or join one of our other programs that fit your needs.
Our Comprehensive DBT Program
We provide a structured and evidence-based Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) program designed to support individuals in building healthier coping strategies and emotional regulation skills. Our program integrates multiple components to ensure a well-rounded and effective treatment experience. Each element plays a vital role in helping clients develop long-term resilience, improve relationships, and navigate life’s challenges with greater confidence.
Individual Therapy
Individual sessions are 45-50 minutes. You will work closely with your therapist to learn how to regulate emotions and replace problematic behavior with newly learned coping skills. You will receive an easy to use diary card to keep track of emotions and behaviors that is designed specifically for you. Typically, sessions are weekly, but more frequent sessions can be arranged if intensive therapy is needed. Family members can be included in sessions in order to improve communication in relationships and create environments that reinforce skillful behaviors.
Skills Training Groups
Skills training groups meet weekly for 90 minutes and are conducted in a structured format. In group, clients practice mindfulness and also learn a new skill that they are asked to practice over the course of the week. Skills practice is reviewed in each subsequent session. For your convenience, groups are offered on various days and times.
We teach five skills training modules:
- Mindfulness skills
- Emotion regulation skills
- Distress tolerance skills
- Interpersonal effectiveness skills
- Middle path skills
LI DBT offers age-specific skills groups, as well as groups with a specialized clinical focus:
- Adult skills groups
- Multi-family skills groups for adolescents and one or both parents
- Young adult skills group for clients between the ages of 18-25
- Parent/family skills group
We offer a summer and winter intensive DBT program for high school graduates and college students. Clients meet weekly with a therapist from our team, or keep their current therapist, while attending the skills training group that teaches the most essential DBT skills.

Phone Coaching
At LI DBT Group, we recognize that challenges don’t always arise during scheduled therapy sessions. That’s why we offer phone coaching as a valuable support tool. Clients are encouraged to reach out to their therapist between sessions when they need guidance in applying learned skills to real-life situations. Whether you’re facing overwhelming emotions, difficult interactions, or the urge to engage in self-destructive or ineffective behaviors, phone coaching provides timely assistance to help you stay on track and use the coping strategies that support your well-being.
DBT Team Consultation
At Long Island DBT Group, we are committed to delivering the highest standard of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). In adherence to the DBT model, our New York-based Long Island DBT therapists meet weekly as a team for consultation and support. These meetings ensure that our therapists remain effective, maintain fidelity to DBT principles, and receive collaborative input on complex cases. By working together, our team strengthens their ability to provide compassionate, skilled, and evidence-based treatment, ultimately enhancing the care and support we offer to our clients.

Family Education and Support Program for DBT
We offer an education session for parents and family members of all clients who join our program, and for family members of individuals who are not currently in treatment. After the initial session, many family members join a weekly group for guidance, support and to learn DBT skills. The group helps the families understand the biosocial origins and development of their loved one’s condition and how they might resort to self-destructive behavior as a form of emotion regulation. This can also be done in individual sessions.
Family members also learn and practice the following skills:
- Mindfulness, validation and, walking the middle path
- Balancing the tension between validation (acceptance) and problem solving (change) strategies
- Regulating their own fear and anger so that they can communicate effectively and consistently with their loved one without getting distracted by self-destructive behavior and threats of self-harm
