Long Island DBT Group offers Skills Training Groups for both Adults and Adolescents. This psycho-educational Group meets once a week for approximately 24-26 weeks in a safe, supportive and non judgmental environment. Participants must also be in Individual DBT Therapy in order to qualify for Skills Training Group.
Group is designed to teach participants the skills of mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance and interpersonal effectiveness, the four modules of DBT. In the Adolescent Program, parents are a very important component of the Group, learning DBT skills and practicing along with their adolescent. Participants practice new skills throughout the week and are given homework assignments to apply what they have learned.
Sessions begin with a mindfulness exercise, followed by Group members reporting on their experiences with the homework. New material is presented and a related homework assignment is given for the next week.
Through teaching, discussion, homework practice and review, Group members learn skills to begin to effectively problem solve and reclaim their life.
