Long Island DBT Group is an out-of-network out-patient provider. We focus on clinical excellence in the implementation of a DBT program, which adheres to Dr. Marsha Linehan’s DBT model. This includes weekly DBT individual therapy sessions conducted or supervised by Certified DBT therapists, DBT Skills Training groups, and a weekly DBT Consultation Team meeting. This model has been shown, in a number of controlled studies, to significantly reduce the need for hospitalization, and the incidence and severity of self-harming behaviors. We strive to keep our programs affordable while maintaining the highest quality of care.

Insurance: Here are some tips for dealing with your insurance company. If you have out-of-network benefits, you will be paying Long Island DBT Group when treatment is rendered and be given a statement to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. It is helpful to call your insurance company in advance so that you will be clear about what your out-of-network benefits are. You should ask the following questions:
a. Can I go out of network?
b. Is there a separate deductible for mental health treatment?
c. How many sessions per year are covered?
d. How much do they pay for each session?
Your insurance company may tell you that there are a number of DBT Therapists in their network, so there is no need to go out of network. Unfortunately, this is not the case. In fact, there are very few Certified DBT Therapists in our region. Many therapists attend professional workshops to learn the benefits of DBT, and may indicate that they are knowledgeable about DBT in a check-sheet survey the insurance company sends to them each year. However, Certified DBT Therapists have been intensively trained and certified by Behavioral Technology Group, headed by Dr. Marsha Linehan who created DBT. The questions to ask to determine if these are valid DBT programs are:
a. Is the therapist intensively trained and certified as a DBT Therapist?
b. Do they offer DBT Skills Training Groups?
c. Do they work within the framework of a DBT Consultation Team?
d. Do they offer phone “coaching”?
Single Case Agreements: Since DBT has been shown to reduce the need for hospitalization, most managed care companies are willing to negotiate a “single case agreement” with Long Island DBT Group as an out-of-network provider for clients who have recently been released from the hospital, or those who are particularly at risk of hospitalization. Flex Benefits: Most insurance companies have different pools of benefits for inpatient versus outpatient treatment. Some will “flex” your unused days of inpatient benefits to pay for several sessions of outpatient treatment, which is much less expensive for them. All insurance companies are different, and there are countless variations in benefits within the same company. You must ask about each benefit. Ask to speak to a supervisor if the clinical care manager does not seem knowledgeable about DBT. |
