The DBT Model

 

  Adult DBT Program  
 

Through a safe, validating and supporting environment, therapists at Long Island DBT Group, teach adult members life coping skills. Through Individual Therapy, Skills Training Group and Phone Coaching, members learn to change the behaviors that interfere with their quality of life.

DBT Skills Training Group: This psycho-educational group, which meets once a week is designed to teach participants the skills of mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance and interpersonal effectiveness. Participants learn new skills; report on their homework experience and their applicability on a daily basis. Through learning to suspend judgment, increasing awareness and acceptance, regulating emotions and using more effective interpersonal skills, group members begin to use effective strategies to optimize their life.

Individual Session: In addition to the weekly Skills Training Group, clients meet with their DBT therapist once a week for a structured individual session. Individual sessions are designed to validate while guiding clients towards improving their lives. Through self-reporting, using a weekly Diary Card, clients become more mindful of the frequency and intensity of painful emotions, urges and self destructive behaviors. After identifying a destructive behavior, therapist and client analyze the event in order to teach the client problem solving strategies to decrease impulsive, mood dependent behavior and expand the repertoire of effective decision making, all necessary steps in building a more satisfying life.

Phone Coaching and Consultation: Clients are invited to call their individual DBT therapist for coaching when they find themselves in crisis. The coaching is an ancillary support to DBT clients. It helps them to apply skills in order to avoid impulsive, mood dependent behavior in favor of Wise Mind decisions.

Family/Couples Therapy: Once a DBT client has gained sufficient skills in emotion regulation and distress tolerance, family or couples therapy sessions are available and encouraged. Therapy is designed to access and identify the maladaptive family/couple dynamics and coping skills, deficits in the family structure, and to develop interventions. It also focuses on strengthening the relationship by teaching non-judgmental stance, validation and problem solving. Another important component is teaching effective communication skills in an effort to create the opportunity to develop a stress free and healing relationship.
